Dutch Mike has been a presence in Detroit’s Underground scene since the early 90s, deeply immersed in the city’s legendary techno culture. Growing up amidst the pulsating beats of techno’s founding fathers, Dutch Mike’s passion for the unique sound of Detroit and its iconic artists became ingrained in his very being.
His style is refreshingly simple yet unmistakably his own, shaped by his background as a rock drummer and under the mentorship of studio drummer Paul Bango. Rhythm and drums have always been the driving force behind Dutch Mike’s musical journey, from his early days experimenting with electronic circuit bending alongside cherished friends to his DJ events that set the underground scene ablaze.
In the late 90s, Dutch Mike’s thirst for knowledge led him to enroll at the Recording Institute of Detroit, further deepening his understanding of sound engineering. His pivotal role in distribution for Moonshine Records during the vinyl era, coupled with his industry experience at The Music Box and DJ Supply, equipped him with invaluable expertise and kept him ahead of the curve.
In 2000, Dutch Mike responded to the demand for smaller sound companies by founding Realsounds LLC, pioneering installations that left a mark on renowned venues like Tonic Night Club in Pontiac, Michigan, where he also secured his first DJ residency.
As the tides of musical trends ebb and flow, Dutch Mike remains steadfast in his commitment to preserving the legacy of Detroit’s underground culture. His contributions include producing half a dozen records with Cryovac Recordings and organizing electrifying live events alongside esteemed artists such as James Pennington, Brian Kage, and Gary Martin, among others.
A testament to his versatility, Dutch Mike seamlessly transitions between spinning vinyl as a performing DJ and crafting live electronic sets, captivating audiences with his unparalleled skill and infectious energy. With each performance, he not only pays homage to the roots of techno but also pushes the boundaries of the genre, ensuring that the spirit of Detroit’s electronic music scene continues to thrive.
